How to Become a Paramedic

If you’re ready to take the next step in your emergency medical services (EMS) career, becoming a paramedic can open the door to advanced responsibilities, higher earning potential, and greater impact in the field. At Respond Right EMS Academy in St. Charles County, Missouri, we’re here to help guide EMTs on their journey toward becoming confident, well-prepared paramedics.

Step 1: Start with EMT Certification

To start paramedic studies one must first attain Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. To pursue paramedic training all hopeful candidates must first complete EMT certification which serves as the essential start to their EMS journey. Basic emergency care delivered by EMTs includes trauma management together with CPR and oxygen administration.

Step 2: Gain Field Experience as an EMT

Hands-on experience is critical. Working in the field helps EMTs build the confidence, critical thinking, and communication skills needed for success in a Paramedic Program. Many Paramedic schools require candidates to have at least 6 months to a year of experience working as an EMT before applying.

Step 3: Prepare for Paramedic School

Paramedic programs are academically and physically demanding. That’s why Respond Right EMS Academy offers our Paramedic Prep Program—a unique opportunity designed specifically for licensed EMTs who want to feel fully prepared before entering a full paramedic course.

Our Paramedic Prep Program includes:

  • A 144-hour field practicum

Step 5: Obtain Licensure and Certification

After completing an accredited Paramedic Program, you’ll need to pass the National Registry Paramedic (NRP) cognitive and psychomotor exams to earn certification. Upon passing, you can apply for state licensure to begin practicing as a Paramedic.
